Following on from our in-depth work on the decorative arts, another important topic close to our hearts is the fascinating interplay between culture and sport, encompassing various fields such as art, sport itself, as well as pop culture.

— À la suite de notre travail approfondi sur les arts décoratifs, un autre sujet important qui nous tient particulièrement à cœur est l'interaction fascinante entre la culture et le sport, englobant divers domaines tels que l'art, le sport lui-même, ainsi que la pop culture.

Le cycle Art & Sport d’Emmanuelle Luciani, en collaboration avec Southway Studio, explore les liens entre le sport et l’art, en mettant en lumière la boxe et le football comme deux disciplines emblématiques. Ce cycle s’articule autour de ces sports en tant qu’expressions de l’ambivalence humaine, où s’entremêlent ordre, chaos, maîtrise et émotion.

Dans des événements comme Bella’s Inferno (2024), le cycle Art & Sport réunit performances-combats, tableaux vivants, et discussions sur l’impact de la boxe et du football dans la culture populaire. En croisant des références à la boxe de compétition, aux imaginaires du football populaire et même aux univers de jeux vidéo comme Street Fighter, Southway Studio et Emmanuelle Luciani tissent un pont entre ces disciplines. Grâce à ce dialogue, Bruno Surace devient l’égérie de leur recherche à la frontière de l’art, du sport individuel et collectif, donnant au public une vision unique de ces pratiques au cœur de l’esthétique contemporaine.

Dans le prolongement de leurs recherches sur le football, comme phénomène sportif, social et quasi mythologique, Bella Hunt & Dante Di Calce et Southway Studio présentent le 25 mai au MUCEM une sculpture-trophée. Intitulée Memories 93, l’oeuvre commémore la victoire de l’Olympique de Marseille en finale de la Ligue des Champions en 1993 et a été exposée à l’occasion de l’événement We Win – Passion, football et Méditerranées, journée mêlant sport et culture, et organisée en partenariat avec le club de supporters des South Winners.

As an extension of their research on football as a sporting, social, and quasi-mythological phenomenon, Bella Hunt & Dante Di Calce and Southway Studio are presenting a sculpture-trophy at the MUCEM on May 25. Entitled Memories 93, the work commemorates Olympique de Marseille’s victory in the 1993 Champions League final and has been exhibited as part of the event We Win – Passion, Football and the Mediterranean, a day blending sport and culture, organized in partnership with the South Winners supporters' club.

Dans le prolongement de leurs recherches sur le football et la course automobile, comme phénomènes sportifs, sociaux et quasi mythologiques, Bella Hunt & Dante Di Calce et Southway Studio ont fait du trophée un de leurs motifs principaux depuis 2020. Cet objet cristallise le travail du studio entre histoire et culture populaire, entre high et low culture : les trophées existent depuis des siècles et sont encore délivrés à l’issue de célébrations et victoires. Les sculptures-trophée du duo sont souvent des hommages à la coupe de la Ligue des Champions remportée par l’Olympique de Marseille en 1993. Leur dernière œuvre en date, Intitulée Memories 93, a notamment été exposée à l’occasion de l’événement We Win – Passion, football et Méditerranées, journée mêlant sport et culture, et organisée en partenariat avec le club de supporters des South Winners.

Building on their research into football and motor racing as sporting, social, and quasi-mythological phenomena, Bella Hunt & Dante Di Calce and Southway Studio have made the trophy one of their central motifs since 2020. This object crystallizes the studio's work at the intersection of history and popular culture, between high and low culture: trophies have existed for centuries and are still awarded in the context of celebrations and victories. The duo’s trophy-sculptures are often tributes to the UEFA Champions League cup won by Olympique de Marseille in 1993. Their most recent work, titled Memories 93, was exhibited as part of the event We Win – Passion, Football and the Mediterranean, a day that blended sport and culture and was organized in partnership with the South Winners supporters’ club.

Le jeudi 28 novembre 2024, à 19h, Southway Studio et Emmanuelle Luciani ont invité Yoann Maestri, ancien capitaine du Stade Toulousain, amateur d’art contemporain et photographe, au Pavillon Southway (433 boulevard Michelet, Marseille). Il a présenté son livre Brilliant Disguise, qui retrace neuf mois passés au Japon. Pendant cette période, Yoann Maestri a documenté son séjour lors de sa dernière saison en tant que joueur professionnel avec les Toyota Industries Shuttles.

On Thursday, November 28, 2024, at 7 PM, Southway Studio and Emmanuelle Luciani invited Yoann Maestri, former captain of Stade Toulousain, contemporary art enthusiast, and photographer, to the Pavillon Southway (433 boulevard Michelet, Marseille). He presented his book Brilliant Disguise, which recounts nine months spent in Japan. During this time, Yoann Maestri documented his stay during his final season as a professional player with the Toyota Industries Shuttles.

À Jamais les Premiers is the restitution of Emile Barret’s residency Funerall Football which took place in september-october 2023. It consists in a photographic research around the cemeteries of Marseille, from the Saint Pierre cemetery to the Aygalades, including the cemetery of Mazargues, and focuses specifically on the burials of football supporters and players of the Olympique de Marseille.

À Jamais les Premiers is the outcome of Emile Barret’s residency Funerall Football, which took place in September-October 2023. This project is a photographic exploration of the cemeteries of Marseille, from the Saint Pierre cemetery to the Aygalades, including the Mazargues cemetery, with a specific focus on the gravesites of supporters and players of Olympique de Marseille.

Southway Studio dévoile les connexions entre art contemporain, histoire et culture populaire et s’empare de l’objet voiture et de son univers esthétique. Emmanuelle Luciani en fait une archéologie en devenir, un vestige contemporain et populaire qui cristallise les bouleversements sociétaux qui émergent dans ce xxie siècle turbulent. Le moteur, le pot d’échappement, la carrosserie, rouillée ou rutilante, sont mis en scène dans ses expositions et projets artistiques totaux comme les échos puissants d’un futur révolu.

Southway Studio reveals the connections between contemporary art, history and popular culture, and takes hold of the car object and its aesthetic universe. Emmanuelle Luciani turns it into an archeology in the making, a contemporary and popular relic that crystallizes the societal upheavals emerging in this turbulent 21st century. The engine, the exhaust pipe, the bodywork, rusted or gleaming, are staged in her exhibitions and total art projects as powerful echoes of a bygone future.
