Andrew Humke

FR / Andrew Humke est un artiste américain né à Cincinnati, Ohio, qui a grandi à Savannah, Géorgie, et travaille essentiellement entre Austin et Marseille. Il a fait ses études à la SCAD, Savannah College Art and Design. Andrew Humke collabore avec Emmanuelle Luciani : ensemble, ils travaillent principalement autour de la notion du motif comme référence historique et géographique .

Formes simples, couleurs naturelles, tons terreux. Toiles brutes, sans châssis, avec des marques de crayons et de pas. Formes et motifs universels, couleurs franches. Telles sont les caractéristiques des œuvres d’Andrew Humke. Cette simplicité ne cache rien. Elle révèle plutôt un inconscient collectif puissant autour de motifs ornementaux séculaires. Il travaille d’abord sur carnets, qu’il noircit de croquis et d’esquisses, desquels jaillissent ses compositions sur des toiles de grand format. Le criterium de ses crayons se retrouvent jusque sous la couche de peinture colorée de ses travaux finaux. Il recourt à des motifs et des archétypes ornementaux et architectoniques; des formes primaires et des éléments primitifs ou antiquisants, assemblés en de solides compositions architecturées. Motifs de palme, de pot, et de colonne rythment les toiles d’Andrew Humke. Ces formes ne peuvent pas être rattachées avec certitude à une civilisation précise ; elles évoquent plutôt des éléments communs de l’humanité. La couleur est un élément primordial de l’œuvre de l’artiste, et ne sera pas sans évoquer aussi bien l’art antique, débarrassé de la fiction de la pureté classique, que de la palette de l’art amérindien. Ces constructions peintes, aux tons chauds rappellent les tonalités méditerranéennes, les peintres italiens du quattrocento et Giorgio Morandi. Andrew Humke, originaire de Savannah en Géorgie, ne développe pas un art aseptisé mais produit des œuvres aux accents ruraux et périphériques, non policées, et ceci est visible jusqu’aux traces de pas que l’on trouve sur certaines des toiles qu’il peint au sol. Andrew Humke vient régulièrement peindre en Provence, comme exhorté par sa pratique inconsciemment universaliste à se confronter à d’autres atmosphères pour travailler sur son art syncrétique.

Andrew Humke collaborates with Emmanuelle Luciani: together they work mainly around the notion of motif as a historical and geographical reference.

Simple shapes, natural colours, earthy tones. Raw canvases, without stretcher, with pencil and footprints. Universal shapes and patterns, bold colours. These are the characteristics of Andrew Humke's work. This simplicity does not hide anything. Rather, it reveals a powerful collective unconscious around age-old ornamental motifs. He first works in notebooks, which he fills with sketches and drafts, from which his compositions emerge on large canvases. The criterion of his pencils can be found even under the coloured paint layer of his final works. He uses ornamental and architectural motifs and archetypes; primary forms and primitive or antiquisite elements, assembled into solid architectural compositions. Palm, pot, and column motifs punctuate Andrew Humke's paintings. These forms cannot be linked with certainty to a specific civilization; rather they evoke common elements of humanity. Colour is an essential element in the artist's work, and is reminiscent of both ancient art, freed from the fiction of classical purity, and the palette of Native American art. These painted constructions, with their warm tones, are reminiscent of Mediterranean tones, the Italian painters of the quattrocento and Giorgio Morandi. Andrew Humke, originally from Savannah, Georgia, does not develop an aseptic art but produces works with a rural and peripheral feel, unpoliced, and this is visible even in the footprints found on some of the canvases he paints on the ground. Andrew Humke regularly comes to paint in Provence, as if urged by his unconsciously universalist practice to confront other atmospheres to work on his syncretic art.
