EN / Driving for survival. Heat up the asphalt, put your foot to the floor, accelerate, take to the highway of progress, hands clutching the wheel of a gleaming muscle car, drive to escape. Then soar into the sky, pierce the clouds, dominate the clouds and, finally, hurtle towards the stars.

For a long time, the motor and the car symbolized faith in technical progress as a vector of freedom and speed, metallic embodiments of the physical and intellectual efforts of a Humanity in search of control. In Marinetti's hallucinatory poems, in F1 tournaments or in Hollywood entertainment like Fast and Furious and its neon Americans, the automobile is a contemporary myth and a deeply popular object.

FR / Gouvernail et gouverneur, le volant est l’interface de contrôle du pilote, et cristallise en lui la puissance et la liberté incarnées par les sculptures de métal motorisées et rugissantes que sont les automobiles. En collaborant avec Desrues, Bella Hunt & Dante Di Calce inscrivent le volant dans la longue histoire des créations à la fois utilitaires et d’apparat, sources de fantasme. Ces sculptures de métal avec leurs ornements et leurs reflets métalliques, tissent ainsi une filiation directe avec les armures de parade, les reliquaires votifs ou encore les vaisseaux acérés Space Opera d’un futur fantasmagorique.

EN / Rudder and governor, the steering wheel is the driver's control interface, crystallizing in it the power and freedom embodied by the roaring, motorized metal sculptures that are automobiles. By collaborating with Desrues, Bella Hunt & Dante Di Calce inscribe the steering wheel in the long history of creations that are both utilitarian and ceremonial, sources of fantasy. These metal sculptures, with their metallic ornaments and reflections, thus weave a direct filiation with parade armors, votive reliquaries or the sharp Space Opera vessels of a phantasmagorical future.

FR / Conduire pour survivre. Faire chauffer l’asphalte, pied au plancher, accélérer, s’avancer sur l’autoroute du progrès, les mains agrippées au volant d’une rutilante muscle car, piloter pour s’échapper. Puis s’élancer vers le ciel, trouer les nuages, dominer les nuées, et, enfin, se précipiter vers les étoiles.

Longtemps, le moteur et la voiture ont symbolisé la foi dans le progrès technique comme vecteur de liberté et de vitesse, incarnations métalliques des efforts physiques et intellectuels d’une Humanité en quête de contrôle. Dans les poèmes hallucinés de Marinetti, les tournois de F1 ou les divertissements hollywoodiens façon Fast and Furious et ses américaines à néons, l’automobile est un mythe contemporain et un objet profondément populaire.

FR / L'installation de Bella Hunt & Dante Di Calce, comme un fast forward vers un futur lointain, est un tombeau chromé où les artistes rendent hommage à l’utopie de la voiture et du progrès technique, à présent vestiges de l’âge révolu du Diesel. Plongées dans la pénombre glaciale d’une crypte sans âge, ces reliques encore luisantes de pétrole gisent désormais en silence sur des autels poussiéreux. Témoins magnifiques et impuissants d’une hégémonie révolue, trois volants dominent la composition, triptyque hybride mêlant tuning japonais, art carolingien et motifs damasquinés, et arriment au mythe, aux côtés de Pégase et des chariots de feu, la voiture et ses organes de métal.

EN / Like a fast-forward to a distant future, Bella Hunt & Dante Di Calce's installation is a chrome tomb where the artists pay homage to the utopia of the car and technical progress, now relics of the bygone Diesel age. Plunged into the icy gloom of an ageless crypt, these relics still glistening with oil now lie silently on dusty altars. Magnificent yet powerless witnesses to a bygone hegemony, three steering wheels dominate the composition, a hybrid triptych blending Japanese tuning, Carolingian art and damascened motifs, and, alongside Pegasus and chariots of fire, tie the car and its metal organs to the myth.

FR / Mais, à l’aube du xxie siècle, l’ombre de l’anthropocène donne à la voiture et, in fine, au progrès technologique, un visage inquiétant. De symbole d’émancipation et de confort, elle est devenue l’emblème ardent et vénéneux du changement climatique. L’angoisse moite et étouffante des années 2020 efface de l’horizon la beauté de la vitesse, autrefois célébrée. Si le choeur des pistons, dissimulés sous la cuirasse laquée d’un capot, et l’odeur de l’essence pouvaient évoquer les kilomètres engloutis sur un chemin victorieux ou sur la route des vacances, ils sont maintenant des spectres délétères à l’origine d’un nouvel ère climatique.

EN / But at the dawn of the 21st century, the shadow of the Anthropocene is giving the car, and ultimately technological progress, a worrying face. From a symbol of emancipation and comfort, it has become the fiery, poisonous emblem of climate change. The muggy, stifling angst of the 2020s erases the once-celebrated beauty of speed from the horizon. If the chorus of pistons, hidden beneath the lacquered armour of a hood, and the smell of petrol could evoke the miles swallowed up on a victorious path or on the road to vacation, they are now noxious spectres at the origin of a new climatic era.
